Laser Gum Therapy

Advanced diode laser technology to treat gum disease, reduce pocket depth and eliminate infection — with minimal bleeding, significantly less discomfort and faster recovery than traditional gum surgery.

What Is Laser Gum Therapy?

Laser gum therapy uses a precise diode soft-tissue laser to treat periodontal (gum) disease — a bacterial infection of the gum tissue and supporting bone around teeth. Unlike traditional gum surgery that uses scalpels, the laser targets only infected tissue while leaving healthy tissue completely intact.

The laser energy simultaneously removes diseased tissue, kills bacteria, seals blood vessels (reducing bleeding dramatically), and stimulates tissue healing. Most patients are amazed by how comfortable the procedure is compared to expectations.

We use laser therapy for a wide range of applications: periodontal pocket reduction, gum depigmentation (removing dark gum patches), crown lengthening, frenectomy, and treating peri-implantitis around dental implants.

Signs You Need Gum Therapy

Bleeding GumsGums that bleed easily during brushing or eating are an early sign of gingivitis or periodontitis.
Swollen or Red GumsHealthy gums are pink and firm. Swelling or redness indicates active bacterial infection.
Gum RecessionGums pulling away from teeth, making teeth appear longer and roots exposed.
Persistent Bad BreathChronic bad breath (halitosis) often originates from bacteria in deep gum pockets.
Dark / Discoloured GumsBrown or black gum patches (melanin hyperpigmentation) affecting smile aesthetics.
Loose TeethAdvanced gum disease destroys the bone supporting teeth, causing them to loosen or shift.

How Laser Gum Therapy Works

1
Periodontal Assessment & Pocket Charting
We measure gum pocket depths around each tooth using a periodontal probe. Pockets deeper than 3mm indicate disease. Digital X-rays assess bone levels. A personalised treatment plan is created.

2
Ultrasonic Scaling & Root Planing
Before laser treatment, an ultrasonic scaler removes hardened tartar (calculus) from above and below the gumline. Root surfaces are smoothed to discourage bacteria reattachment.
⏱ 45–60 minutes
3
Laser Pocket Decontamination
The diode laser fiber is gently inserted into each gum pocket. It vaporises infected tissue, kills bacteria selectively and seals blood vessels — all in one precise pass. No scalpels, no sutures in most cases.
⏱ 30–60 minutes
4
Clot Stabilisation & Healing
The laser stimulates a stable blood clot in each pocket that acts as a scaffold for new tissue attachment. Post-op instructions are given. Return to normal activities the next day in most cases.
⏱ Immediate healing begins
5
3-Month Review & Pocket Re-evaluation
Pocket depths are re-measured at a 3-month follow-up. Most patients show significant pocket reduction and improved bone levels. Maintenance cleaning visits every 3–4 months are recommended going forward.
⏱ Review after 3 months

Laser vs Traditional Gum Surgery

Minimal Bleeding

The laser seals blood vessels as it works, resulting in 90% less bleeding than conventional scalpel surgery.

Faster Recovery

Most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours — compared to 7–10 days recovery for traditional surgery.

Precise & Selective

The laser targets only infected tissue, leaving healthy gum cells completely unaffected.

Stimulates Healing

Laser energy bio-stimulates cells to produce collagen and new tissue attachment to root surfaces.

Reduced Sensitivity

Post-treatment sensitivity is significantly lower than after traditional flap surgery.

No Recession Risk

Unlike flap surgery, laser therapy rarely results in gum recession — preserving your aesthetic gum line.

Post-Treatment Care

1
Soft Diet for 24 HoursEat soft foods — yoghurt, rice, dal — avoiding anything hard or crunchy that could disturb the clot.
2
No Smoking for 72 HoursSmoking severely impairs gum healing and dramatically increases risk of treatment failure.
3
Gentle Rinsing with Warm Salt WaterRinse with warm saline 3× daily for 1 week to keep the area clean and reduce inflammation.
4
Resume Brushing CarefullyBrush gently around treated areas for 1 week using a soft-bristled brush. Floss daily but gently.
5
Take Prescribed MedicationsComplete antibiotics and anti-inflammatories as prescribed to prevent infection and manage swelling.
6
3-Monthly Maintenance CleaningsGum disease is a chronic condition. Quarterly professional cleaning is essential for long-term gum health.

Laser Gum Therapy FAQs

Most patients describe it as significantly more comfortable than they expected. Topical anaesthesia is applied and, for deeper pockets, local anaesthetic is used. The laser itself produces a warm sensation rather than pain. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild and lasts less than 24 hours.
Gingivitis (early gum disease) can be completely reversed with professional cleaning and good home hygiene. Advanced periodontitis cannot be "cured" — it is managed. Laser therapy reduces pocket depths and eliminates bacteria, but regular maintenance every 3–4 months is essential to prevent relapse.
Gum depigmentation (laser gum bleaching) uses the diode laser to remove dark melanin pigmentation from the gums, giving a uniform pink, healthy-looking gumline. It's a quick, 30-minute procedure with virtually no downtime — results are immediate and long-lasting (3–5+ years).
